new baby girl

The Baby\’s Here!

Well done Jenny

So, the big day arrived! And on the due date no less! I am extremely proud to announce to the world that little Molly Primrose Button was born on the 21st April 2014 weighing 7lb 4oz at 10:37am.

I have to say that watching your wife go through labour and then childbirth provides a curious mixture of emotions ranging from fear and anxiety to excitement and elation.

Jen did fantastically well, which was expected, but you should have seen me go at 2am after a poke in the ribs and being told it’s happening! We both flapped for a few minutes then I ran up and down the stairs for no apparent reason, Jen asked me what should we do? I said ‘I don’t know what did the NCT lady say?’ Then the training kicked in. You should have seen me, our instructor would have been proud.

After a few more trips up and down the stairs I had lit about 40 candles in the bathroom after running a bath. I downloaded a hypnobirthing album from iTunes with the sounds of the sea and an Australian woman telling us how ‘normal’ the contractions were and that the pain is ‘good pain’. I soon had that soothing away the stress (after rigging up an extension lead and iPod dock to the bathroom) and I felt that I had the situation well under control.

Over the next few hours, Jen got out of the bath and I got back into bed, only to be rudely awakened by Jen at 6am telling me that it was time to go…after she had a shower, washed and dried her hair, shaved her legs and put her make up on. Which she did impressively whilst having contractions every 3 minutes or so! By 7am we reached Southmead Hospital, where amazingly they had nobody delivering a baby in the whole place, so we had 2 lovely midwifes instead of 1. On arrival Jen was 5cm dilated and playing it cool…3 and a half hours later, a couple of pushes et voila! Easy, apart from a couple of over the top squeezes of my hand (remember expectant mothers, don’t just shave your legs, cut your finger nails).

I could go on and on about how beautiful and perfect our daughter is but that’s just not what blokes do. There is enough of that already, our house has been taken over by cards and gifts, which is lovely and appreciated but I will say to parents-to-be…don’t buy much until she’s born!

This month also saw the relegation of Bristol Rovers. As many of you know I’ve been working for them for 11 years and was working at their last game. I have never seen such a sad dressing room after the game. No matter who you support in Bristol, it is not a good thing for Rovers to go out of the leagues and I have never felt so gutted for everybody at the club and all of the supporters. We had so many chances in that game and it was really well supported by the fans. The number of times I jumped up and down as we hit the post or narrowly missed the goal. I really hope that this does the club some good in the long run and we sort out the problems and bounce straight back, making a city the size of Bristol have 2 strong football clubs like it should have with 2 good sized stadiums.

I feel like that I am finally starting to become less of an embarrassment to Molly and her friends as the TRX suspension exercise classes are doing the magic that is needed to transform the flab into some lovely defined muscle. We now do classes on a Tuesday and Friday evening.

I would like to thank everybody for their well wishes for a healthy baby, I have to say that it is wonderful how perfectly things are going so far and I’m sure the positive thoughts sent from everybody must have helped.
