Mindset – The Missing Link in Musculoskeletal Health
Over the past few months at Cleve Chiropractic, we’ve explored what we call the Four Pillars of Health—Movement, Nourishment, Recovery, and now, Mindset. While the first three pillars focus on physical foundations, this final one brings everything together.
Mindset may not feel tangible, but it profoundly affects how your body responds to stress, injury, recovery, and long-term wellbeing. In this final feature of the series, we’ll explore how your thoughts, beliefs and ability to manage stress can dramatically shape your musculoskeletal (MSK) health—and how small mindset shifts can lead to big results.
What’s Mindset Got to Do With MSK Health?
The answer is: more than you might think.
The body and mind are deeply interconnected. Chronic stress, anxiety and negative beliefs can cause or worsen:
- Muscle tension and joint stiffness
- Headaches and neck pain
- Shallow breathing and jaw clenching
- Sleep disruption and fatigue
- Heightened pain sensitivity
- Slower healing and inflammation
At Cleve, we regularly see how mental load impacts physical health. And just as poor mindset can hinder recovery, a calm, supported, and positive approach can accelerate it.
Learning to ManagePressure – A Personal Note from Tim
As President of the British Chiropractic Association, clinic director, and a dad of three, I know how easy it is to let stress build up. Add in a new running and weight training regime, and the need to recover well—both mentally and physically—has never been more important.
Some weeks, I’m travelling across the UK by plane, train or car, squeezing in late-night CPD, public speaking engagements, and clinical duties at Cleve. But I’ve learned that mindset can make all the difference. When I stay calm, rested and focused, everything runs smoother—from decision-making to posture to performance.
Here’s the truth: stress is inevitable. But how we respond to it is where we find our strength.
Practical Strategies for Managing Stress and Building Resilience
Mindset work doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are five evidence-based techniques I use personally, and that we often share with patients at Cleve Chiropractic:
1. Box Breathing
Used by athletes and military personnel, this technique instantly calms the nervous system. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and hold again for 4. Repeat for 1–2 minutes before meetings, sleep, or during moments of overwhelm.
2. Reframing Thoughts
Our internal dialogue affects our recovery. Instead of thinking “I’ll never get better,” try “I’m improving step by step.” Changing the script in your head can change how your body experiences pain and stress.
3. Movement as Mental Medicine
A brisk walk, jog or short workout can reset your brain chemistry. That’s why I protect time for exercise—on busy travel days or weekends, it’s often the most powerful mood regulator available.
4. Journalling and Mental Download
Before bed, I write down tasks or thoughts that are cluttering my mind. It helps me sleep better and wake up clearer. No app needed—just a pen and paper.
5. Herbal Sleep Rituals
Winding down matters. I often finish my evenings with a warm mug of chamomile or rooibos tea—especially after a long clinic day or travel. It’s a gentle signal to the brain that the work is done.
Supporting Mindset in Clinic
At Cleve Chiropractic, our team supports mindset in both subtle and structured ways.
We start with clear explanations to reduce fear and uncertainty. We celebrate small milestones with patients, encourage consistent effort, and remind people that healing isn’t a straight line. We create an environment that fosters optimism, confidence, and trust—qualities that often lead to better outcomes.
Mindset matters just as much as mobility.
You’ll see this mindset in action across our team:
- Lucy remains calm and focused under pressure in the high-speed world of motorsport
- Callum supports elite athletes at Keynsham Ladies FC with mental and physical resilience
- Catherine continues to lead with clarity and kindness, even as she balances work and family during pregnancy
- And our reception team, including Kate (currently celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary with Paul), greet every patient with encouragement and warmth
The Four Pillars – Complete
When combined, the Four Pillars of Health provide a complete foundation for MSK health:
| Pillar | What It Supports |
| Movement | Strength, mobility, coordination |
| Nourishment | Energy, recovery, and inflammation control |
| Recovery | Healing, sleep, and adaptation |
| Mindset | Resilience, consistency, and clarity |
Your health isn’t built on one moment of effort—it’s built on many small, daily habits. These four pillars are here to support you at every step.
